Vertical & Horizontal Lines

The 'Why': Why do co-ordinates in a straight line on a graph create vertical and horizontal lines?

This lesson starts by building on the knowledge built in the previous two lessons. There are a selection of co-ordinates and students are asked to identify whether they follow a certain rule or not. Students can complete this however they choose but I would suggest that they copy a quick version of the table (No rulers required!).

There is then a reminder of the literacy involved in this. Many students will likely already familiar with this language so (if you're comfortable with it), this works best to point at the first one and have students call out which one they think it is. what they might not have thought about before is the root word. This is featured on the next slide and compare 'horizontal' to 'horizon' and 'vertical' to 'vertebrae'.

There is then an explanation of vertical and horizontal lines which students students should copy down including the definitions. Be sure to reference that these lines go on forever and that is shown by drawing a line the whole way across, not just on the co-ordinates that we have drawn.

Students are then asked to complete a task where they list all the co-ordinates on a given line and what the next point on those lines might be and then to plot vertical and horizontal lines based on being given the equation/function of a line. There is then some written problem solving questions and some area problems combining skills in area as well as vertical and horizontal lines.

Lastly, there is a 6 question true or false which can be done using thumbs up to vote for true or thumbs down to vote for false. Encourage students to take a good look at the graphs first and then cast their vote. Keep an eye out for people not sure and give them the option of in the middle if they aren't sure.
