THE GOLDEN CIRCLE

THE RATIONALE

The Golden Circle_edited.jpg

While studying Product Design at the University of Brighton, I was introduced to Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle; The concept that the nature of communication comes in levels positioned in concentric circles with ‘What’ on the outside, ‘How’ the next level in and ‘Why’ in the middle.

Most communication, through no fault of our own, goes from the outside in. But the best leaders and communicators had learnt to communicate from the inside out. As a result, we can think act and communicate in the exact same way.

From above, these circles correlate with a cross section of the brain. The ‘How’ and ‘What’ sections line up with our neo-cortex (Responsible for rational thinking and logic). The ‘Why’ section lines up with our limbic brain (Responsible for all of our feelings).

The Limbic system is also responsible for all human behaviour, all decision making and most importantly, it has no capacity for language! In other words, when we communicate from the outside in we can understand vast amounts of complicated details BUT it doesn’t drive behaviour.

When we communicate from the inside out, we are speaking directly to this emotional core and then simply backing up what we are saying with rational thought and processes.

Teaching obviously isn’t devoid of this idea. Teachers have developed their own ideas and ways of teaching different subjects. This is simply an attempt to codify it and provide a useful framework to better conceptually motivate lessons.
