The 'Why': The use of being able to identify an exact location

This lesson starts with a goal free question about the usefulness of co-ordinates for map reading. There are no co-ordinates on the images. Encourage students to suggest ANYTHING that they can conclude from the images. Popular suggestions will be that "North is up" and "Location B is further south than Location A". Follow up with the question, how could this be made easier?
Following examples and activities for regular Axis & Co-ordinates, there is a task based around CNC milling machining. Co-ordinates are the basis of how these machines work and there is a short video to illustrate this. There is then a role playing activity that asks students to imagine that they need to manufacture the components for a park bench. The components are listed and an example is shown. There is an example video of the possibilities that CNC machining has to offer.
Extension activities include drawing a cartoon from the co-ordinates. (The shapes colour in afterwards to reveal Bugs Bunny) and Battleships.
Activities included:
Goal Free Question
Definitions & Examples of Axis & Co-ordinates
Activities on finding & plotting co-ordinates
